Plantronics C65 Headset Review

The Plantronics C65 is a fully GAP (“Generic Access Profile”) and DECT™ (“Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications”) compatible wireless headset designed for use in fast-moving business environments – warehouses, fast food outlets, etc. – which receive a high volume of telephone calls and where customer service is the order of the day.
The headset features a noise cancelling microphone which means that less background noise is heard by the caller so it can be used effectively even in noisy environments. A feature of DECT™ phones – most domestic cordless phones are of this type – is the ability to add extra cordless handsets to the system and the Plantronics C65 effectively “tricks” the existing system that it is just another cordless handset.
The Plantronics C65 is modern in design and lightweight – in fact weighing in at just 27g – such that it can be worn comfortably all day. Users can choose from over-the-ear – 3 different sizes of ear clip are supplied – or adjustable headband wearing options as standard and a unique “behind-the-neck” neckband is available as an optional extra. Incoming calls can be answered and terminated at the push of a button on the headset, rather than on a phone handset, and volume adjustment, or muting, is performed in a similar way. An LED (“Light Emitting Diode”) in the headset indicates when a call is in progress.
The Plantronics C65 is supplied with a sturdy desktop charging station which can be used as a holder when the headset itself is not in use. Battery life is typically 9 hours talk time – sufficient for the longest and busiest working days – or 60 hours standby time but the headset can be recharged between calls, if necessary, by placing it back in its charger. LED indicators on the charging station alert you to the current battery status. In terms of range, the Plantronics C65 can theoretically be used at up to 300′ away from a base station although in a typical office environment 150′, or less, is likely to be more realistic. This is, of course, still far in excess of what is possible with Bluetooth® devices – effective at up to 32′ or less – and is one of the principal advantages of DECT technology.
The headset can be registered to any DECT compatible, or GAP compatible, base station and, once registered, becomes an independent extension on that telephone system. The Plantronics C65 does not, however, have a keypad so outgoing calls must be initiated by using a phone handset, or, of course, a computer. Voice data, however, is encrypted using 64-bit encryption so that there is no danger of eavesdropping on your calls by unscrupulous individuals or groups.
